TPACK LESSON PLAN
THE LESSON:
·         Step 1: Teacher will instruct students on how to form the signs of the English alphabet with their hands and what each symbol represents. (Teacher will walk through the formation of each sign, slowly). (4 minutes)
·         Step 2: Teacher will repeat the signs of the alphabet asking students to follow along with the signs as the teacher signs them.  (3  minutes)
·         Step 3: The teacher will sign the alphabet again at a faster pace while singing the alphabet song. (Students are encouraged to follow along as the teacher signs). (2 minutes)
·         Step 4: Students will watch the Sign Language video on YouTube that introduces some common phrases used in everyday communication. (4 ½ minutes)
·         Step 5: Students will be asked to find a partner and ask their partner “What is your name” in sign language. (Students learned how to sign this phrase in the YouTube video). (1 minute)
·         Step 6: The teacher will show the online website for learning sign language and more information on the deaf community. (This is a wonderful source for people wanting to learn more about sign language and what it is like in the deaf and hard of hearing community). (1 minute)
·         To see if the students retained the information provided in the instruction, the teacher will use the Smart Board and writ out some phrases and the students will be quizzed individually on how they would respond using ASL. (5 minutes)
OBJECTIVES
·         By the end of this lesson students will be able to successfully be able to identify the hand signs in the English alphabet using ASL
·         Students will be able to introduce themselves to an individual who uses ASL as a form of communication.
·         Children will be able to ask another individual what their name is using ASL.
ASSESMENT:

REFLECTION

  • My strategies for this lesson is to repeat the material as often as needed. I believe that in learning any new language that practice makes perfect, and repetition is the easiest way to obtain new material. I repeted the American Sign Language alphabet at least 3 different times going at different paces to ensure that all of my students grasped the material. I also had students break up into groups to see if they could test out their sign language with a partner. I believe that practicing with a patner makes students feel more comfortable with making mistakes.

  • Most students will have a very base level understanding of ASL and most students will atleast know what ASL is, even if the do not know how to sign. If there is a student who is deaf, they will more than likely have a deeper understanding than someone who has no relation to the deaf community. Students who speak another language such as Spanish may have an understanding of SSL (Spanish Sign Languag), or some students may have a easier time grasping the concepy because learning new languages come easier to them.

  • Technology definatly influenced my instruction, I used technology to introduce common phrases used in ASL and had my students sign back what they had learned. I also used technology to provide my students with additional sources that they can use to further their understanding of ASL. I believe that the inclusion of technology allowed my students to engage with the lesson a little bit more.

  • I believe that I could have used a little more one on one time with my students to see if, as individuals, they were understanding the instruction. I was looking around the class and noticed that maybe 1 oor 2 people were really engaging with material and they understood it, but the other students were not as understanding of the material. I should have included one on one instruction so that the whole class was understanding of the content.

  • I believe that the students had an easier time understanding the illustrations from the teacher in the video. She displayed common sayings and the students had time to practice the material as she was showing it. Because I have already seen the material displayed in the video I could use this time to see if everyone was following along, and I could help those who were stuggling.

  • Because I used the video that displayed common ASL greetings and sayings, my students now had an understanding of those ASL symbols. I did not provide that portion of the instruction myself so the technology benefited their knowledge. Students can use the resource that was provided on the internet to seek more information and learning tools on ASL.

Comments

  1. I absolutely loved your lesson! I thought it was great that you incorporated the videos, and then had us practice. The practice helped us to remember the topic way more than just watching a video. I think you did a great job!

  2. Your lesson was so unique and challenging but fun. I really enjoyed your lesson. It was really helpful how you used the video to help teach us and then you had us practice. Another key factor that I noticed you did while teaching was repeating how to sign the alphabet. By showing us several times how to sign, showing us the video, and then having us practice, I was able to learn how to sign my name, and a few other things. You did a great job!
